3 things to know about Galimard and perfumery in Grasse

A vibrant and historical tourist town in the south of France, Grasse is the cradle of the perfume industry in Europe, and renowned worldwide for production of primary materials and perfumes.

The rare fragrances found in Grasse have earned it the title of the World Capital of Perfumery. It’s vital geographic placement and pleasant micro-climate make it a haven for the culture of specialty flowers and noble essences. It provides an endless source of inspiration for the many perfume creators, or « Noses » that call it home. How did Grasse become the world capital of perfume ? To answer this question, we have to bring you back a few hundred years in time !

Galimard & perfumed gloves

The City of Grasse is an international reference in the perfume industry, as it is the home for various fragrance production sites, flower fields and greenhouses. For hundreds of years, leading names in Haute Couture have called on the local perfumers of Grasse to create their fragrances. However, the story of Grasses influence in the world of perfumery goes back even further.  Let’s take a trip to the 17th century to understand the evolution of the city of Grasse, and the birth of Galimard, to which the history and patrimony of this beautiful city is deeply linked.

During the 17th century, Grasse was home to more tanneries than perfumeries. This is how Galimard began, as a leather tannery. The maison was known for its quality and finesse, using only the finest leathers. The technology for leather tanning, however, was not what it is today, and all leather products gave off a powerful scent due to the processes used at the time, which created a constant source of disgruntlement for the nobles wearing these beautiful gloves. For this problem, Jean de Galimard, lord of Seranon, found a solution : He reinitiated a Court tradition that had begun 200 years before his time – perfuming gloves by soaking them in fragrances of flowers and spice. Several years later, as the leather industry began to wane, the Perfumer-Glover Jean de Galimard turned all his focus to perfumes, and launched in 1747 the perfumery Galimard as we know it today.

Grasse granted the title of world heritage site by UNESCO

The city of Grasse has a unique heritage, enriched by its special history and the legendary perfume makers that have flourished here. With the savoir-faire of perfumery seeming to blossom naturally from the earth, Grasse is a hub for plant extraction, transformation of herbs and spices, and constant evolution of the industry through research and development. Grasse earned its title long ago, and its current residents continue to churn like a beating heart to purvey the rest of the world with a steady flow of perfumes – made in France. Our Maison de Parfums Galimard, created by Jean de Galimard 275 years ago, is proud to be an integral part of this heritage as one of the first French Maisons de Parfumerie.

Already recognized within the cultural heritage of France for its flower farms and traditional savoir-faire, Grasse officially received the title of World Heritage Site by UNESCO on November 28, 2018.  To learn more about it, follow this link : know-how associated with the development and Creation of  Perfume in the region of Grasse .

The factory-museum of Galimard in Grasse

Grasse is the fourth largest city in the Alpes-Maritimes region. Every year, thousands of tourists come to discover everything the region has to offer : the Azur Coast, beautiful mountains and canyons to the north, the cultural and artistic history of Grasse, and the savoir-faire of the authentic perfumers who line the streets.

In the 1980’s, the director of Galimard, Jean-Pierre Roux, son of Joseph Roux, inaugurated the first Factory-Museum dedicated to sharing the secret world of the perfumery of Grasse. His vision was to create a place of immersion into the heart of Grasse, where one could retrace the history of the industry of perfume and discover how it is intrinsically linked to the city of Grasse.

Still today, all visits to our Factory-Museum are completely free of charge. If you would like to come by and see us this summer, check out the options on this page: Perfume Factory and Historical Museum in Grasse.
